Age Restrictions

  • "A child of fourteen years of age may only be employed to do light
work, which is not likely to be harmful to the child's health and
development; and does not prejudice the child's attendance at school,
participation in vocational orientation or training program mes
approved by the competent authority or the child's capacity to benefit
from the instruction received."

  • "A child under eighteen years of age shall not be employed in a
mine, factory or as crew on a ship or in any other work site including
non-formal settings and agriculture, where work conditions may be
considered hazardous by the Minister. For the purpose of this
subsection, ''ship'' includes a vessel of any description used for
navigation."

An Interesting Fact

"During any leave cycle, an employee shall be entitled to at least 3 days paid paternity leave if-
(i) the leave is taken within 7 days of the birth of a child;
and
(ii) the employee is the father of the child;"

(Jamii Forums, 2007)

I found this quite interesting, that the father is only given 3 days, to be with with his family. I personally think that the father should be given more time to "help" his wife, because bringing home a new born baby is not an easy job to handle by yourself. (Well at least I think! ) In other places I think the paternity leave can vary, from 2 -28 days (Jamii Forums)

Insight On Rights

My mentor suggested to interview a lady who is involved with the support staff of our school. She deals with all of their rights, and I'm hoping she'll be able to tell me some of the main labor laws that apply to them. I'm also interested to know what she does to make sure the the laws are actually followed. So I am stoked about the interview!!! (If it happens of course :S )

Change of Plans :D

Hey guys!

This is going to be just a little short post, about a few changes. Unfortunately due to lack of time, because summer holidays is like a few 2 days away (Woot!) I don't have enough time to interview some of the staff at our school. No fear! With personal project there is ALWAYS a back up plan. I am still planning to interview other labourers, but just not in school. The three main types of people I am interested in interview are:
  • Farmer
  • Cleaner
  • Builder
It's going to be super exiting, can't wait!!

Let's Get Personal!!

Okay, so I've been doing quite a lot of research, and WHOA, there is some pretty interesting stuff out there. At first "labour" sounds so, well boring. I guess coming from a highschool student, labour has never really been of any of my concerns, (except for doing chores of course). There is so much, to learn about the way people work here in Tanzania, and how many rules and regulations apply to them. Crazy no?
